CYCLE TO WORK SCHEME

Save Up to 47% on a New Bike

The UK Government's Cycle to Work scheme lets you get a bike and accessories through salary sacrifice — paying from your gross salary before tax. We accept all major scheme providers.

UK Government's Cycle to Work Initiative

The UK government's Cycle to Work scheme is a salary sacrifice initiative that allows employees to save 32% to 47% on a new bike and safety accessories. You lease the equipment from your employer, and payments are deducted tax-free directly from your gross salary over a 12- to 18-month period.

What Is It?

A Tax-Free Way to Buy Your Next Bike

The Cycle to Work scheme is a UK Government initiative introduced under the Finance Act 1999. It allows your employer to provide you with a bike and safety equipment as a tax-free employee benefit.

You pay for the bike through salary sacrifice — monthly deductions from your gross pay before tax. This means you don't pay Income Tax or National Insurance on that amount, saving you between 32% and 47% depending on your tax band.

No Price Cap

The original £1,000 limit was effectively removed in 2019. Through FCA-regulated providers, you can now get bikes and accessories worth thousands of pounds — the only limit is what your employer approves.

HOW IT WORKS

Five Simple Steps to Your New Bike

The process is straightforward. Your employer works with a scheme provider who handles all the paperwork and compliance — you just choose your bike.

1

Speak to Your Employer

Ask your employer if they offer a Cycle to Work scheme. If they don't yet, they can register with any of the approved scheme providers — it's free for employers to set up.

2

Choose Your Provider

Your employer selects a scheme provider (intermediary) such as Cyclescheme, Halfords Cycle2Work, Vivup, Bike2Work, or Green Commute Initiative. The provider handles all the administration and compliance.

3

Apply & Get Approved

Apply through your provider's online portal. Choose the bike and accessories you want, up to your employer's approved limit. Once your employer approves, you'll receive a certificate or voucher.

4

Redeem at CycleDealia

Bring your certificate or voucher to us. We'll help you choose the perfect bike, get you fitted, and you ride away the same day. We accept all major scheme providers.

5

Pay Monthly, Tax-Free

Repayments are deducted from your gross salary over 12-18 months. Because it's pre-tax, you save on Income Tax and National Insurance — typically saving 32-47% on the total cost.

What Happens at the End?

After the 12-18 month salary sacrifice period, you typically have three options: return the bike, pay the fair market value to own it immediately, or choose an extended use period (most popular) where you pay a small refundable deposit and keep riding for a further 3 years, after which ownership transfers to you at no extra cost.
